Applying for an F-6 Spousal Visa in Korea

Registering for an F-6 spousal visa in South Korea is much easier than getting a spousal visa in many Western countries. The process is relatively quick and cheap! Nonetheless, collecting all of the necessary paperwork might be a bit overwhelming. To help you out, here is a list of all the documents you need and where you can get them. Before you start, make sure that you are both registered under the same address. The foreign spouse can change change his/her address at a City Hall (시청) or District Office (구청).  

Here are the documents you need:

• Certificate of Marriage Registration (수리증명서).  You need to get this from the same district office (구청) where you registered your marriage.

You need to get the Certificate of Marriage Registration translated, notarized, and apostilled. Fortunately, this can all be done at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (외교통상부 여권과) located in Jongro, Seoul.  

• A translation of your Certificate of Marriage Registration. The translation must be done by a certified translator and you will need a copy of the translator's degree and their ID card. The translation should cost 15,000 won.  

• A notarization of the translated Certificate of Marriage Registration. This is done at a law firm. The US Embassy provided a list of law firms. We use a law firm in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade building. The notarization will cost 25,000 won. 

• An apostille for the notarized and translated Certificate of Marriage Registration. You can get this at the Passport Office (여권과) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (외교통상부 여권과) The cost of the apostille is 1,000 won.  

 You can get the next three documents at a local dong office (주민센터) :

• A Family Certificate (가족관계증명서) 

• A Marriage Certificate (혼인관계증명서)

• A Resident Certificate (주민등록등본) with both people living under the same address.

• A letter recognizing the marriage from the US Embassy (or a comparable document if the foreign spouse is not American). You may already have gotten this letter if you visited the Embassy when doing your marriage paperwork.  We mentioned it in Step 1 of our post on How to Register a Marriage.

• Proof of Income (소득금액증명원) for the Korean spouse. You can get this at a national tax office (국세청) or online at www.hometax.go.kr.

• A Credit Report (신용정보조회서) for the Korean spouse. You can get this at the National Bank Union (전국은행연합회) or you can get it online at www.credit4u.or.kr

• A copy of your housing lease 

• Proof of employment (재직증명서) for the Korean spouse. 

• Annual pay stub (원천징수영수증) for the Korean spouse.

• Your passport  

Now you're ready to visit the Immigration Office (출입국관리사소) and apply for your F-6 visa!

Making an appointment is always more convenient. At the immigration office, you will need to fill out some documents. You may also be able to print these off ahead of time from www.hikorea.go.kr:

• Letter of Invitation for Marriage Immigrants (결혼이민자초청장). This involves writing how you met, your jobs, your relationship history, etc.

• Marriage Immigrant's Background Statement (결혼이민자 배경진술서). This includes educational and family information. 

• A General Certificate (기본증명서) for the Korean spouse. This can be printed out at the document machine at the immigration office.  

• An Identity Reference (신원보증서) 

• Old photos of the two of you as a couple. This may not be necessary, but it's good to have them just in case.  

The cost of the F-6 visa is 100,000 won. The cost of getting a new alien registration card issued is 30,000. The cost of delivery is 4,000.

수리증명서는 혼인신고를한 해당 구청에서만 발급가능하고 혼인신고한지 시간이 지나도 발급받을수 있어요

수리증명서를 번역 자격증이있는 전문번역가에게 

번역를 받고 번역하신분의 신분증, 학위인증사본 함께 받습니다 (번역비 15000원들었어요) 

미대사관에서 지정한 공증 법무법인으로가서 

번역받은 수리증명서를 공증받습니다 

대사관 사이트에서 지정된 법률사무소를 확인할수있으며 2만5천원정도 공증비용이 듭니다

이 서류를 들고 외교통상부 여권과로 가서 

아포스티유(apostille) 를 받으시면 되세요. 

인지비용이 천원정도 들고, 

번역에 공증에 외교통상부 여권과에... 

가는길이 복잡하다고 생각하실수 있으나 

외교통상부 여권과 건물에... 번역 공증 모두함께있으니 걱정마세요 !

-혼인관계증명서 (혼인신고후 바로발급이 불가하고 3~4일 소요될수있어요)

-주민등록등본 (배우자의 외국인등록증을 갖고 주민센터가셔서 배우자 정보 넣어서 등본뽑아달라고 하시면 되요. 그럼 맨하단에 배우자 정보를 넣어 줍니다.) 

-대사관에서 받았던 결혼추천서 

-결혼이민자 초청장 (우리부부가 어떻게만났는지, 직업이뭔지, 우리가 연애한 사진도 붙이는 서류예요ㅋㅋㅋ 출입국관리사무소에서 받으실 수있어요)

-결혼이민자 배경진술서 (배우자의 배경진술서입니다 출입국관리사무소에서 받으실 수 있어요) 

-초청인(한국인 본인)의 기본증명서 (동사무소나, 출입국 사무소의 민원서류ATM에서 바로뽑을수있어요)

-신원보증서 (출입국관리사무소에서 작성하라고 주십니다)

*위의  출입국사무소에서 받는서류 중 결혼이민자 배경진술서와 결혼이민자 초청장은 하이코리아 홈페이지 www.hikorea.go.kr 민원서식 에서 출력 후 미리 작성해가시면 시간절약 할 수 있어요

혹시몰라서 남편의 근로계약서 사본도 제출했구요 

인지비용 10만원에, 외국인등록증 재발급비용3만원 완료후 택배비 4천원 들었습니다! 

수원출입국 사무소는 아침일찍 오픈하자마자 도착했는데도 대기인원이 어마어마했어요.

(최근 2016년 6월 남편 비자 갱신으로 목동 출입국 관리소 방문했을때는 출입국 관리사무소 홈페이지에서 방문예약할 수있었습니다. 홈페이지에서 예약하는게 자꾸 에러나서 전화했더니 전화로 예약 잡을 수 있었어요. 확인해보세요) 

How to Register a Marriage in South Korea

Getting married in South Korea is surprisingly easy! Here are the simple steps for registering a marriage between a Korean and a foreigner. This example is for a marriage to an American, but the paperwork is similar for all nationalities. The process is also similar for two non-Koreans getting married in South Korea.


1.  Prove that you are eligible to be married. For Americans, this means visiting the US Embassy and completing a notarized Affidavit of Eligibility for Marriage (picture on the right). An affidavit is a written sworn statement. In this instance, you are swearing that you are currently unmarried. If you are not American, ask your Embassy what document is available that proves you are eligible for marriage.

For Americans to obtain an Affidavit of Eligibility for Marriage, first you must make an appointment on the US Embassy website. When you visit the embassy, you must bring your passport (or other proof of American citizenship). The Embassy will provide the affidavit form. After you complete the form, you will meet with a notary and they will notarize the affidavit. The notary fee is $50. Both US dollars and Korean won are accepted, as well as international credit cards.  

When you are at the US Embassy, be sure to get a blank letter recognizing your Korean marriage (picture on the right). The Embassy should offer this letter when you complete your affidavit. It is a simple letter saying that although the Embassy does not keep a record of marriages, it does recognize your marriage in Korea. You will need this letter if you plan to apply for an F-6 spousal visa.  





2.  Translate the notarized Affidavit of Eligibility for Marriage (or other proof of eligibility, if you are not American). You do not need to use a certified translator. Anyone is able to do it, even the future Korean spouse.


3.  Take the translated affidavit to your local district (구) office and complete a marriage application. You can get the marriage application ahead of time on the Korean court (대법원) website or you can just get it at the district (구) office. Any district office in Korea is okay. You need to provide the signatures of two witnesses, but in our case we were able to use the ID cards of my Korean parents. Complete the marriage application with your future spouse and submit it to the office clerk. The application is free. (If both people are non-Korean, the fee is 50,000 won.)


Your marriage certification should be approved within 7 days. You may be notified via text message. Congratulations!

2.  혼인요건 진술서 번역하기
공증이나 전문번역가가 필요없어서 가능하신분이 번역하시고 하신분 이름쓰시면 되요

3.  한국 대법원 사이트에서 미리출력해둔 혼인신고서를 작성합니다. 

구청에 가면 서류 다 있으니 대법원 사이트에서 미리 출력안하셔도 되고, 결혼 증인 두명의 주민등록 번호가 필요합니다. 저는 저희 부모님 번호 적었었어요.

이때 미리 외국인등록증을 받은사람은 

결혼 서류에 외국인 등록번호도 넣어준다고 하니 

챙겨가시면 좋을것 같아요!

혼인요건진술서 빼고 한장은

배우자의 비자를 결혼비자 F6으로 바꾸는데 필요하니 분실하지 마세요. 호호호

First, let me introduce my family!  
This is my husband, Michael.  He is from Minnesota, USA and has lived in Korea for over five years.  We met in 2012 and were married in August 2014.

2014년 8월 9일에 결혼했어요.  

We have a cat named Maggie!  He was born on May 11, 2015 in Jeonju, South Korea and we adopted him when he was 2 months old. He is a male cat, but he is named Maggie because it is short for Magpie, which is both a common bird here in Korea as well as the name of one of our favorite bars :)    He is well-behaved and usually very sweet!

아들 매기를 소개할게요, 
이름때문에 암고양인줄 아시는데 매기는 맥파이, 까치에서 따온 이름이예요 저희 커플이 자주 가는 맥주바 이름이기도 합니다 ;)
